Every millimetre of the Retina display was designed, engineered and built to the most exacting standards. Something that 14.7 million pixels makes exceedingly clear. As does a 1.4-millimetre-thin display panel designed around the human eye - so every interaction feels as natural as can be. It's that attention to detail that inspired the all-new 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display. And just like the Retina 5K display, it delivers a larger colour palette with more accuracy.
Wider Colour Palette - True-to-life colour. Alive on screen.
Many of the brilliant, unique colours you see in the real world never make it to your screen. A wider colour gamut makes more of these real-life colours available on the Retina display. A striking 25 per cent more. So whether it's a sunset at the beach or your favourite football team's jerseys, you'll see them just as you saw them - on a display that's more vibrant than ever.

To see colour as it appears in real life, you've got to capture the ones you're missing. And a wider colour gamut does just that. Retina moves well beyond the typical sRGB display with an all-new P3 colour gamut. This is achieved by shifting the Retina display away from standard white LEDs to advanced red-green phosphor LEDs. Now all three colours - red, green and blue - are more equally represented, and show off real-world colour with more balance and precision.
The colour you shoot is the colour you see.
Many cameras, including DSLRs and professional video cameras, can capture a far wider range of colour than the typical sRGB colour gamut. And with a new P3-based wider gamut, the iMac Retina display is able to bring more of those real-world colours to the screen. So go back and reprocess those RAW images you've saved - and reveal colour you haven't seen in them before.
Innovation. On top of innovation.
Engineering the Retina display involved the precise calibration of 23 layers that make up a display panel that's just 1.4 millimetres thin. And out of that process we made advancements to improve not only the resolution but also the quality of the entire iMac display. So in addition to the incredible detail, you'll see blacker blacks, more vivid colours and images that practically jump off the screen.
Orchestrating the performance of 14.7 million pixels.
A more advanced timing controller. The timing controller, or TCON, is the brains of the display - it tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. But even the most powerful timing controllers available couldn't manage the number of pixels on the iMac Retina 4K and 5K displays. So we created a new one - a single, supercharged chip that's able to command up to 14.7 million pixels.
Clearing the way for signal quality.
Organic passivation. With so many pixels on Retina display screens, clear communication between them requires organic passivation, or 'overpass' technology. It separates the pixels from the signals that tell them when and how to light up - preventing any cross-talk, or interference, that could result from putting so many pixels so close together. This maintains the quality of the image on screen while those signals are being transmitted.
Delivering true-to-life imagery from every angle.
Photo alignment. To improve on-axis contrast, we implemented an advanced process called photo alignment. This involves shining UV light to create a uniform terrain across the film coating on the TFT and colour filter, so when the liquid crystal molecules are exposed, they lie exactly where they should. Better-aligned molecules mean you see better contrast when you're directly in front of the display.
A display like this is the kind that people gather around. And at this size, even when you're looking at the centre of the screen, you see the corners at an angle, or off axis. To make sure the contrast is perfect from every angle, we use a compensation film that controls how the light exits the display. The result is a display with truer colours, no matter where you view it from.
Enclosure - 5 millimetres thin. Just the right size to do something big.
The first iMac was a revolution: an all-in-one computer that put everything - display, processor, graphics, storage, memory and more - inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Today's iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we've ever built, and it's filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it's still just 5 millimetres thin at its edge.
One of the biggest challenges our engineers faced with the iMac enclosure was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it's not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So we used a process called friction-stir welding. It combines intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminium surfaces - creating a seamless, precise and remarkably strong join.
Fusion Drive - Storage that's lightning fast. And whip smart.
Storage is about space. But it's also about speed and performance. A Fusion Drive gives you the best of both worlds. This innovative storage technology intelligently combines speedy flash storage with a high-capacity hard drive. Your frequently used apps, documents and photos stay on the faster flash storage, while infrequently used items move to the hard drive. And as the system learns how you work, you'll experience faster application launching and quicker file access. Fusion Drive can be configured with up to 3TB of storage.1 But for those who want the ultimate performance, there's an all-flash option that's now up to 2.5 times faster than the previous version.

Processors - Think fast. We did.
A fifth-generation Intel Core processor in the 21.5-inch iMac. An all-new sixth-generation Intel Core processor in the 27-inch iMac - at up to 4.0GHz - and 1867MHz memory. You couldn't ask for more speed. Yet Turbo Boost 2.0 gives you even more when you're using processor-intensive applications like Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. It all takes place behind the scenes, but you'll see the difference in performance.
Graphics - Images that render you speechless.
The latest AMD high-performance graphics give the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display up to 3.7 teraflops of graphics compute power. The 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display also lights up with enhanced Intel Iris Pro Graphics. Both deliver visual effects and 3D graphics that exhibit raw power in its most polished form.
Fusion Drive - A fusion of storage, speed and intelligence.
Fusion Drive combines the spaciousness of a traditional hard drive with the high performance of flash storage. Choose a swift 1TB Fusion Drive or a lightning-fast version with up to 3TB of storage. Whatever the choice, everything from booting up to launching apps to importing photos is faster and more efficient. That's because your frequently used items are kept at the ready on speedy flash storage, while infrequently accessed items go to the hard drive. It's the best of both worlds.
For maximum performance, you can configure iMac with up to 1TB of PCIe-based flash storage that's now up to 2.5 times faster than the previous version. Delivering up to 1800MB/s of sequential read performance, pure flash storage is the fastest way to blaze through the most demanding tasks.
Thunderbolt 2 - Blazing-fast data transfer.
Each of the two ultrafast, ultraflexible Thunderbolt 2 ports significantly expand the capabilities of iMac. For example, you can connect high-performance peripherals and move data up to 40 times faster than with USB 2, and up to 25 times faster than with FireWire 800. You also have more than enough bandwidth - up to 20Gb/s - to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices and still maintain maximum throughput.

With three-stream 802.11ac technology, iMac takes desktop Wi-Fi to unprecedented speeds.
